Spring Semester is quickly coming to its conclusion

This eight week Semester has been one roller coaster ride...and I don't particularly care for roller coasters; I am more of a "Tilt-A-Whirl " girl!   After one more week and I will see the results of my efforts in my grades. I will never take 4 classes in an eight week semester again!

I guess I can say I did accomplish learning Final Cut Pro...but I'd also have to say it was a very stressful process in eight weeks.  FYI; I discovered some great tutorial videos for beginners, and the links really helped me out with my  audio project and final project.  I feel you can learn just about anything Online by watching a video, a highly recommend it!  I have posted some helpful links below.

Spring Summer-2011; video production

This Spring I will learn to use a video camera and shoot an original final video project.  This Semester will be pretty fast paced, but I will try my best to keep up. I am featuring the video that explains the workings of the Sony PD 170 camera we will be using.  After I master the class I have been told I will have the know how to shoot short films, wedding videos, etc., and I am pretty geeked.  Check out my practice camera's functions.

Spring - Summer 2011; weight training

Well, I am signed up for a weight training course... and so far I am the only female registered.  Can't wait to see how this pans out with my new fitness regiment. A friend of mine shared a website called http://www.bodyrock.tv/ that seems pretty difficult. I would like to share one of the workout videos from YouTube. Seems very intense, but I may give it a try in baby steps.

"Voice over" example...

In  a comment I received, after my last blog, someone asked me , "What is a 'voice over'?"  I apologize for my delay in responding, but finals kept me pretty busy. Check this video out.  It is fun and has a great example of the 'voice over' technique from a screen play that is incorporated into a video. :-)

Psst! hibowler (who asked the question) 'voice over' is just that voice that can be heard when no one is actually speaking in a film! But check out this video anyway.  It is amusing.  ;-)

Short Photo Videos can be seen on www.flickr.com

I have been really geeked after making my public service announcement video for my writing class. So I came up with the idea to incorporate some of my photos into short videos for my final Directed Studies Photo Class Project. After re-familiarizing myself with the Word Movie Making Program I used basic editing techniques as to not overpower my photography. It took some time for it all to come together but I was very happy with the results of my attempts at being a movie maker.

Okay so the bad news is that I uploaded my videos onto http://www.flickr.com/ only to discover that the website only shows the first 1 minute and 30 seconds of the video.  This means that my approximately 4 minute videos are stopped way short of completion. You may ask, "why didn't you make your videos 1 minute and 30 seconds?" My response would be, "Because I used my favorite instrumental artist's ( Ryan Farish) music for sound and I didn't want to stop the music so quickly. I was disappointed but I think the videos still give a good sampling of my photography. Take 1 minute and 30 seconds to check out my movie making skills. :-)

"His God Given Gift", is the title of my first amateur screenplay

My mock movie screen titles for "His God Given Gift".
Boy did I have fun in my Writing for Television and Radio Class. I really learned a lot from the experience this semester.  I have to admit that at first it was intimidating, but once I got started on each individual assignment I had no problem coming up with ideas.

I wrote a Public Service Announcement about organ donation, I wrote a commercial about an energy drink, and I wrote a short screenplay. Dr. Nicholas Schlegel encouraged classroom group interaction and feedback, so ideas and honest criticisms were shared.

On our last class meeting Dr. Schlegel shared that I was either the student with the most re-writes or a close second. ("Thanks Dr. Shlegel for sharing that with my classmates!" :-)  Well to be honest the ten page screenplay was the most challenging. My first two page draft was written more like a novel than a screenplay and I discovered there is a big difference between the two styles. In a screenplay you have to write the scenes in the present tense and you have to write only what can be captured by the camera. It's very important to know that inner thoughts or motives CANNOT be included in the screenplay unless a Voice Over is indicated. By my fifth re-write I think this crucial information was firmly planted in my brain.

Art History AH/HON 4240 is coming to its conclusion for the semester.  I feel that participating in its community outreach programs, and documenting my experience in this blog, has been very rewarding.

I was able to meet my deadlines and submit my grant proposal, 'Creating and Expanding Art Digitally', for Mariners Inn.  I made the necessary changes and did the additional research that was requested and I feel it has a good chance of being funded. I sure hope Mariners Inn can benefit from my efforts.

I would like to thank Dr. Mame Jackson for giving me the opportunity to make a real difference in this Community Arts Program. I would also like to thank Doreen Webb for allowing me the opportunity to contribute in The Obama Project at Mariners Inn. Last, but not lease I would like to thank my fellow teammates, Ayaka Hibino and Nathanial Smalls, as well all the men at Mariners Inn who participated, for making our team efforts memorable.

The above video features Mariners Inn and many of their previous projects.

The Mariners Inn project of recreating the likeness of President Obama in Domino’s was a very enjoyable experience.  I was happy to have the opportunity to document most of the process with my photography.  I met a lot of interesting people at Mariners; Workers and Clients. I found the entire social experience of volunteering my time to this non-profit organization rewarding.

Over the past two weeks the (AH/HON 4240) Art History Class has been listening to class presentations of grant proposals.  There have been some interesting ideas presented.  Last Wednesday it was my turn to speak on my proposal for Mariners Inn. To be perfectly honest I am not a fan of speaking publicly, but I felt it was important to present my grant proposal for Mariners Inn.

I received  great feed-back from my classmates, Doreen Webb, and from Dr. Mame Jackson. My grant proposal requires additional work but I feel it's foundations are strong. I really hope the men at Mariners Inn benefit from my plan to add two Mac computers and  photo printer/scanner to thier exsiting computer lab.

I discovered a great artistic Adobe Photoshop video which is an example of how the men at Mariners Inn can use learn to create digitally. :o)

I did some research on local golf courses as part of my volunteer time at Mariners Inn.  My search was limited to Grand Rapids, Jackson, Traverse City, and Gaylord Michigan.  The list of courses will be used for the upcoming 9th Annual Golf Classic!  The 9th Annual Golf Classic takes place June 3, 2011. Click the hyperlink/highlighted words for additional information.

I was amazed at the amount of golf courses that there are located in Northern Michigan. If golf is your game of choice, Michigan seems to have a wide selection of courses to choose from. Check out this video,

I needed resources for grant assistance in order to make my grant proposal successful for Mariners Inn. The following are online resources for information and services for nonprofits, including grants, loans, assistance, taxes, management, etc.

I am hoping that my proposal to add two Mac Computers to the Mariners Inn's computer lab will indeed be implemented.  With the following resource links I hope to complete my mini grant proposal. My fellow classmates as well as blog followers are welcome to check out these links.

I recently did research online to find Finder Binder resources for Doreen of Mariners Inn.  I would like to share these links here because I think they are important resources. They are very useful for anyone looking to get their press releases published in a timely manner.

My first public service announcement

I am currently taking a Writing for Television and Radio class. This semester I wrote a public service announcement as well as a commercial. Amazingly enough this writing came easily to me. I went from 'having no idea' to immediately getting ideas that worked the first time. Of course I have a tendency to write too much so the editing suggestions by my professor have really helped.

I find I am very interested in taking my art to video form.  I haven't had a video production class but I recently undertook learning my movie making program. Writing the announcement was the easy part of my PSA (public service announce) but I wanted to make it more interesting by adding some of my photography!

Using clouds as a backdrop was my first choice. I always take photographs of clouds and I didn't want the photographs to distract from the message. To view my first attempt at movie making ;) click here

"Thanks for all your help Alonso del Arte ...and of course a great big "thank you!" to Ryan Farish who allowed me to use his wonderful music."~Tanya Britt, eyesonuphoto

The following feedback is from my professor on the finished project;

"Your effort here is wonderful. My only "professional" critiques would be to have voice over talent do the spot and to run the voices through some basic effects. But, for your demo reel - it's lovely. I really appreciate you getting in contact with the composer (I know how much you love him) - the music really makes the PSA. Great Job!

Each student in AH/HON 4240 is required to present a grant proposal as a final assignment. I admit at first I was stumped, but then it all fell into place and my ideas began to flow. I have come up with an idea for expanding the computer lab at Mariners Inn.

My proposal consists of adding two Apple Computers, a photo printer and scanner to the lab.  Instruction, the appropriate creative software and printing supplies will also have to be accounted for in the budget.  The benefits the men at Mariners Inn will gain include; increase computer knowledge which might lead to future employment opportunities and increased self-esteem. I feel this is a do-able plan so now I must work out all the fine details of my grant proposal.

I do know for certain that this addition to the current computer lab will enable the men at Mariners to expand their creative ability. It will also allow them to take their art to the next level in digital design.  The options will be limitless to what they will be able to accomplish. They can scan their art and use photoshop to enhance their designs. They can also place their designs on greeting cards, t-shirts, as well as make journals, calenders, etc.

Now I must work out the fine details.  Listening to beautiful music gets my creativity flowing. =)

Admission is voluntary and the client must be 18 years or older and sober before admission. The Inn has a total of 128 beds.   Contact (313) 962-9446 for more information." ~Mariners Inn

During one of our previous volunteer days we helped Maurice "Moe" Hunter's displayed his mosaic art at Mariners Inn. I brought my camera along to document the process.

The healing affects of art are quiet evident in the great difference it has made in Moe's life. He has spent many hours developing his talent and has gone on to create some pretty impressive pieces.

In my photographs I feel I have captured Moe's pride in having developed his mosaic art. I think it is great that Mariners Inn has a policy to display the artworks done by their men. This gives everyone a chance to enjoy the finished artworks.

On March 2 the class topic was Art and Healing- Transforming the Community.

Miniature Peruvian quilt

We had three presenters, Nancyann Turner (Capuchin Soup Kitchen), Jenenne Whitfield (Heidelberg Project), And Doreen Webb (Mariners Inn). Each spoke of the part their organization is playing in healing the community.

I am very familiar with the Mariner's Inn's accomplishments since I have been assigned to work with that group. Please click on the highlighted words for information on the organizations.

I was very impressed with Nancyann Turner (Capuchine Soup Kitichen) work she is doing with the young children who come into her facility.  She share a published photo-book of the photographs the children had taken after a camera workshop, and she shared some hand stitched quilts. She illustrated by presenting these items that working together on projects and as a community heals and brings people together. I have included photos of one particular quilt from Peru ( I believe) that I just loved.

Miniature Peruvian quilt
This quilt used a combination of quilting and appliques. I discovered  a video of  Peru that features some of their music and workmanship. It was explained in the lecture that most of their quilting art is done as community projects.
